vampire weekend concluded their cali small venue tour w/ a show at the lomita vfw hall (veterans of foreign wars). it was pretty rad to combine indie music and youngsters with some old grinning veterans who got in free through the back entrance... and vampire weekend killed it regardless of your age (some vets told me so). gallery on laweekly.com

the galaxy beat rival chivas usa 1-0 last night to advance to the mls western conference finals. donovan scored the game winner (tying the mls playoff scoring record) and the game also had the usual... hard fouls (6 yellow cards), tailgating supporter groups and shirtless beckham moments. full gallery on laweekly.com!

Z-Trip, A-Trak, Cut Chemist and So-Me and others joined host Steve Aoki for the final Banana Split party, paying tribute to the man who helped start it all 3 years ago with a slide show and various wall projections. Felt like a family affair and you could feel DJ AM in spirit. LA WEEKLY GALLERY.

my sixth la times street fashion shoot was in my hometown of santa monica. the gallery on latimes.com includes some models, musicians, fashion designers, tourists and of course a clown. always a diverse crowd on the promenade... check the GALLERY HERE.
'serendipity' is hard to describe in words. a mix of talking flowers, bugs and bees, interactive actors, beautiful make-up, costumes and musical/circus/poetry/dance performances. photos tell the story much better so check my la weekly gallery here.

coalesce and cave in rocked the last scion metal show at the knitting factory (closing soon). it's rare to catch a musician mid loogie, but if you shoot enough you'll see (and capture) a little bit of everything.

many of you remember my mid-session decision 4 years ago to drop out of brooks photography school and fly to ecuador to visit max and amie and explore south america for a month. i was burned out at that point and couldn't even lift a camera my last few days at school... yet the second i got to ecuador i rediscovered my love for shooting. one of my short trips was with max's cousin elizabeth who was working with a indigenous tribe called the cofan. on the long bus ride over i read a book about the cofan's courageous and intense battles (and victories) with oil companies over the years. i was able to hang out with and photograph these beautiful people for the next few days, and above are two of the photographs i shot. the man in these photos is featured in a new documentary called "Crude" which is about the battle between the oil companies and the cofan people that still wages in the jungles of ecuador. please check out this film!
happy birthday to the man who bought me my first camera and continues to teach me so much about life and photography. love ya pops.

not your average bikini car wash... this one (thrown by pingping, the rabbit and the hear gallery with proceeds going to help dj notorious jen) featured a slew of dj's, graffiti art, live portraits, hot dogs and jello shots, talented bikini'd gals and speedo'd guys, kids pools, massages and a bunch of photogs. look for more in the near future! the closing party for scion's installation 5 featured a bunch of the artists for a private vip reception with dim sung, good beer, dj dirty dave and some bday balloons. above: french w/ his birthday balloon (happy bday!), codak and friends, dirty dave and a guest having fun w/ one of the pieces.

i donated my saturday to one of my favorite non profits, H.O.P.E. (Helping Other People Everywhere) who teamed up with JAYO and The Sinjin Smith Volleyball Academy to raise money for Autism and HOPE and other great causes. here are some of my photos and i even got to play a little bit toward the end of the day.
scion's (another of my favorite for-profit companies) latest tour features 40 artist's 'self portraits' and an auction with 100 percent of the proceeds going toward 'Creative Capital,' the premier national artist support organization (www.creativecapital.org). bid here! above, art by lisa alisa and jeff soto, and artists mark mothersbaugh (of devo), christina m. felice and kofie with their pieces.
tamar levine brought me in to assist for a recent summer fashion shoot she did and here is one of the images.
toms shoes is one of my favorite 'for profit' companies (you might have seen this commercial) so i was excited to cover the family reunion fashion night out party for them. toms donates one pair of shoes to a child in need for every pair bought, so check out the website, buy some shoes and help out some kids! (my photo below of founder blake mycoskie is currently featured on the tom's home page as well). thanks to peyton (flintstone dj) for the gig. 
i went to document tony's bar for la times' brand x magazine and they ended up publishing a photo gallery on latimes.com. check it out here and stop by the bar some time when you're 'thirstay.'

was lucky enough to photograph and spend a couple hours with DJ AM for my 2nd la times shoot way back in the day. it's a sad ending for an amazing talent... hopefully he's in a better place.

scion put on their final metal show at the knitting factory after a great run of 7 shows. vice mag co-sponsored and both torche and big business put on good shows for their loyal followings. not as much crowd surfing or 2nd floor stage diving this time around, but steve brooks did end the show w/ a dangerous crowd surfing finale himself. respect.
friend and singer/songwriter aras won survivor but doesn't want you to know that (or listen to his music because of it). he came by the studio recently for some portraits and a quick jam session and has already collaborated with musicians like damien rice and amy kuney. you can check his music out here.
another old friend and singer/songwriter, cindy santini just finished her album and we shot some studio and beach portraits for the artwork. you can check out some of her songs here!
elizaveta is a talented singer/songwriter/opera singer who can pick up almost any instrument and master it. you have to hear her perform some time. photos taken at eliza's house earlier this summer.

after shooting nikki and rich's sick showcase at the viper room (photos soon) it was off to cinespace for dim mak tuesdays w/ etienne de crecy, congo rock and ebony bones. etienne's show wasn't nearly as epic as his coachella performance, but still good times.

my friend and client alan s (of conquest housing fame) asked me to come shoot a fun engagement session of him and his new fiance (congrats guys!) in the style of prince rainier and grace kelly. here is the inspiration and final product. how did we do?

naomi schimek creates unique artisanal cocktails at r bar on monday nights with fresh herbs and spices and brand x magazine sent me to document her concoctions (see naomi and her habenero dripping "prop 8" cocktail above). photos in the brand x article online and in newstands and metromix.com.
andrea labarge mills (former photo editor of filter magazine) recently put out a press release for the photo collective i'm a part of called "this is a photo blog." the blog was started by tamar levine and features several up and coming u.s. photographers. the press release includes my "after dark" image shown above, shot for the la times on new years 2008 and submitted to the blog shortly after. check it out here!

everybody looks at art differently. some people's eyes pop out, some people's mouth's gape open, and others just look on stoically (see above). regardless, another stellar saturday night at scion space (curated by faesthetic magazine). gallery:
zomby, joker and 12th planet added the perfect night cap to the awesome day that started w/ the laker's parade below. gallery:
a beautiful, peaceful, diverse and smiling/cheering/clapping crowd came together for the lakers' parade in downtown los angeles. the parade was ridiculously well organized considering the short amount of time, so one has to wonder how long the lapd has been "secretly" planning the event. haha, probably before the playoffs even began. how's that for lack of respect for the jazz/rockets/nuggets/magic. there have been a lot of debates about the costs of the parade in this economy etc. in the end, la spent $150k or less to bring 250-350,000 people together from all walks of life (not to mention all the revenue those people brought along with them in parking, food, merchandise etc) for a once in a lifetime (or every few years if you are the lakers) celebration that rejuvinated a city. hard to find many negatives in that.
kobe found my lens amidst the chaos to throw up a 4, one for each ring he has (see his puppet hand t-shirt as well). ice cube threw me a different version of the four ring sign.

malbon bro's had me come shoot the sailor jerry premiere at the silent movie theater in los angeles, documenting the life of one of the most influential and popular american tattoo artists. free sailor jerry rum was also served, and perhaps due to the 92 proof or the large amounts of tattoos in the crowd the people got DOWN. above, one of the featured tattoo artists and malcolm.
